WE LAUNCHED AT GOOGLE SAN FRANCISCO
Michael Latulippe with his friend Nate who went onto found GrowersHouse.com originally launched Cannabis Society as Open Cannabis at a Freebase meetup within Google’s offices in San Francisco in 2011. Nate and Michael were aiming to gather Freebase developers to work on an open data project for cannabis that would incorporate Google’s Freebase structured data into the application before Leafly became the industry leader. Our logo is trademarked and has been in use since 2011 at Google. Check out what our original Website looked like all those years ago at the Internet Archive.
2011 FIRST MEETUP LAUNCHED IN SF
The social side of Cannabis Society began back in San Francisco in the early days of the cannabis industry in February 2011. Michael Latulippe had been working as a core leader of the SF Americans for Safe Access chapter and began cross-promoting their meetings and posting them on meetup. These meetups were all medical cannabis focused and often featured special guest speakers from the bay area and direct action activities for patients. The original meetup group from 2011 is still around and exists as the Cannabis Society of California.
